Scan texts to locate the required information by using strategies such as looking at repeated words, words in bold, italics and capital letters
Skim texts to obtain a general impression and the gist or main ideas with support (e.g. teacher, visual)
Follow simple instructions and signs by recognising keywords with visual support
Understand information from front covers (e.g. title, author), pictures and page numbers
Work out the meanings of words and expressions by recognising the base words within other words (e.g. mother/ grandmother, rain/rainy), high frequency words (e.g. the, not) and repetitive patterns (e.g. Not I)
